Probably Mass Effect 1 - I wasn't a big fan of RPGs before that point, but the action-RPG with decisions that shaped the future story really hit home with me, it felt so new and refreshing. Before that probably Halo:CE.
Before that would have been Trade Wars:2002. Apparently one game per decade really strikes me :p
