Devil May Cry was originally Resident Evil 4. Capcom did a lot of experimenting for how they wanted RE4 to turn out.

As much as RE4 wasn't a real Resident Evil. It did lay the blueprints for games such as Hears of War and uncharted so it was a pretty important software release in its own right.
