The biggest difference between humans and chimps is we have 23 chromosomes, and chimps have 24.  Chromosome 2 in humans is a single chromosome.  In all other primates, including Neaderthals, Chromosome 2 is two separate chromosomes.  We have a mutation that merged the two chromosomes together.
