Because their financial gains would be even lower. From a business point-of-view, Nintendo going third party right now would be the worse thing they could do. The company would have massive lay-offs and would lose a lot of its market value.
What would be the better? Team up with another big eletronics company for the next console, launch some games for the mobile market, and explore its franchises on other media, like movies, tv, comics etc
