If only folks would spend as much time and effort proving their own religion, as opposed to disproving everyone elses :)

Well that right there is the purpose, by diverting attention away from your own by picking apart anothers, you artificially elevate your own to a higher status.

In my opinion, religion is a leftover of a time when people used it to explain things they couldnt understand or explain, or used it to control the masses, both reasons are plied heavilly in it's use today, while very few religions have any tangible, varifiable basis beyond written word.

And of course, it's all too easy in this day and age to start a "religion" of your own and make bank off of the naivety and vulnerability of your followers that many do.
