A lot of people try to blame the merge with Enix as what began the decline of Square's franchises. Truth is, Square started losing its touch about 14 years ago. Pretty much since the launch of the PlayStation 2. They tried to branch out into other genres they were not very familiar with like real world racing and wrestling. That didn't go over so well. Their games had already been going down slowly in average critical reception. By 2003, Square had become little more than a Final Fantasy machine. If it wasn't a new single-player Final Fantasy game it was a sequel, a spin-off, an online game, a port-over, or a remake. A non-Final Fantasy game had become increasingly rare.
