Looking at their present consoles i think we can assume they have realized the importance of brand recognition (both the 3DS and WiiU are following the same brand as their successor).

The PS4/X1's launch line ups weren't that much better than the WiiU's, but they sold so much purely on being "next PlayStation and Xbox". The WiiU would likely have found a similar source of success had the Wii no been dead by the time it arrived.

It depends on their aim for the device

When they come up with completely new things they change the name convention

I wouldn't say that's true. Both the 3DS and WiiU kept their predecessors brand name, despite the 3DS being incredibly similar to the DS, and the WiiU being entirely different from the Wii. The contrast suggests that's not a criteria they use for naming their consoles (at least not anymore).
