It could at some point, but after Sega cancelled support to Platinum due to financial problems, the future was dim and uncertain for many of their projects. They just couldn´t refuse Nintendo´s offer to publish it. Better safe than sorry, right ?

Well, how the situation unfolds, it would be safe and sorry now.

Why sorry? Platinum is getting paid to develop the game. If it´s a flop the losses will be all of Nintendo. If it sells well both companies take the profits. From a business point of view, that was the best decision they could take.

It was this or cancel the project and proceed with lay-offs

That's why sorry.

Besides if it is a flop, Platinum will be affected as well. I doubt they would not get a part of the share if it makes profit. If they don't earn money to make their next game, then they will proceed with layoffs. I suppose it was the best deal they could get at the time, but don't tell me they will be happy if it flops.

I´m not saying that they will be pleased if the game don´t sell well. That´s not the point.

This is about business decisions. If you were a director at Platinum, what would you prefer ? Accept Nintendo´s offer and guarantee at least two years of funding and work for your company, and a future possibility of profits..... or rejecting it, fire your development team and wait for some sign from the heavens ?

At least they´re getting some room to breathe. Their financial situation could be even worse by now.  How this project will affect their reputation is uncertain yet.
