6 years of life span is actuly not that much, say 5 years totaly untill xbox720 comes out then thired party and some first party titles one year.
For me I think all manufactures need to have some new models five years from now, simple rule that if one get a new system out of the door everybody else will follow.
I actually expect that both Microsoft and Nintendo are aware that you can inflate your sales numbers by producing a better version of the exact same console every couple of years; think GBA->GBA SP->Gameboy Micro.
Many people will buy the new version and either give their old system to a family member/friend or trade it in/sell it (which provides an inexpensive alternative) ...
