It makes sense to stop shipment production in Japan since the Wii model they sell in Japan is the expensive original model with Gamecube support (and has a MSRP of 20,000￥JPY or about $200 USD).
Anyways the Wii had a good run in Japan and made some good coin, though the 3DS will pass it soon in hardware sales.
