A good chunk of those franchises had started just the previous gen (GTA, GT, Tekken, Tony Hawk, MoH, Crash, NFS) and were hitting their stride during the PS2's lifecycle as opposed to 15-20 years earlier like all of the franchises Nintendo routinely relies on to sell their hardware every generation with the exception of Pokemon, and even that franchise is now more than 15 years old. Of course you left out all the PS2-era exclusive franchises like Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Devil May Cry, God of War etc, that further expanded the system's library and gave gamers even more options. |
I edited my post to better say what I meant, if u look at the top 20 selling games only 2 new ips were made for PS2, Kingdom Hearts and Guitar Hero. It doesnt matter if it was 5 years or 20 years, the fact of the matter is by the time PS2 released all those series had anywhere from 3-10 entries which makes them old series.
U also failed to point out that Nintendo releases a fair amount of new ips every single generation and also lets many of its popular series take breaks for multiple gens.
Im not trying to downplay PS2, its an amazing system but it relied on old franchises just as much as Nintendo consoles do.
