Most of them yea, aparently the industry is a real meatgrinder and only the truely pationate people survive for long. Clearly as an animation director he earned enough to be able save enough to go work on personal project for a year so he wasn't doing too badly for himself, but that doesn't mean that he can blow a couple grand on a new production spec workstation.
