A few years ago there was a big rush by EA (and other publishers) to sign up some of the big name developers on deals where the develoeprs retain the rights to the IP. It made EA still a key part as publishers but weakened their strength on the IP and gave develoeprs more strength.

I think what has happened is EA gave Insomniac this deal, but have since decided 1) they want to scale back their development budgets to less games of 'bigger' impact 2) They want control of the IP's again. They've gone into a deal with Insomniac but now backed out before they've launched it - they're still contractually obligated to get it out but have no real interest in making it a hit as it no longer fits their company wide goal.

Fuze will be sent to die, most likely with some other EA IP's, as they look to concentrate their focus to fewer but bigger IP's. I think EA will step back from backing games like Crysis, Medal of Honor and SSX in the future in order to focus on the behemoths - FIFA, Battlefield, Madden. Their change of heart has come during Fuze's development - and I think there could be a lot of fallout from this over the year once the game comes out and bombs. I don't think Insomniac will crumble like Free Radical - as I think they're run sensibly enough to prevent that. And I reckon Sony will bail them out if needed.
