The Playstation was born out of a failed business deal between Sony and Nintendo to add a CD device to their console. Nintendo decided to not add-on an optical drive to SNES, and to go with game carts for the N64 as well. Sony didn't want to waste their development efforts and money, so they used the optical drive they had designed and instead built their own game console.
