After more than a decade of lobbying, gamers will soon be able to purchase Australia's first R18+ video game, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge.

AUSTRALIA'S first R18+ video game is about to hit shelves.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge received an R18+ rating from the Classification Board this morning.

The last incarnation of the game, Ninja Gaiden II was previously available in Australia but it was modified to meet the MA 15+ rating.

The R18+ rating came into effect on January 1 and comes just months after the bill to introduce an R18+ rating for games passed in Parliament.

Ron Curry, CEO of the Interactive Gaming and Entertainment Association told news.com.au that he was glad the board had "immediately adopted the use of an R18+ classification because that's what we have asked for, for a long time."

"What we need to monitor is how it needs to be applied going forward," he said.

The CEO said the R18+ would be used liberally to begin with.

"This is to be expected," he said. "Everybody needs to get used to what it looks like and how it feels, and we will probably see the rating used with caution to start with."

"Then they'll loosen up."

Nintendo hasn't released an official launch date for the game but said that people should keep their eyes tuned to its website for updates.

So does Ninja Gaiden 3 deserve an R18+ rating? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
