Great news. I don't know how "successful" it will be but I am a big fan of any *nix system.
I installed ubuntu on an AMD system as an entertainment system. Windows was to bloated and power hungry for it but ubuntu handled it with no problem... until stupid netflix and lovefilm stopped linux users from accessing their services because open-sourced software gives users the source code and can therefore be hacked. Fair enough I suppose.

I too had issues with my AMD card but found solutions online. I choose ubuntu because there seems to be far more help available online than any other linux. It was something to do with restricted software installation or whatever.
The biggest problem was getting blu-ray and HDMI working but again solutions were found online.
