It's probably a Christmas anomaly. The Wii is likely an attractive option for parents with smaller kids and a limited budget, especially with the Skylander stuff. A lot of parents aren't going to buy something really expensive for younger children. They aren't worried about it playing Call of Duty or how it looks compared to the rest, either.

Of course, some of those kids might be pissed off on Christmas morning, as we will almost certainly have "asked for a Wii U but got a Wii from parents who didn't know the difference" scenarios. There are probably a lot of adults who have no idea that the Wii is effectively dead, as well.

How are returns tracked, anyway? Not at all?

You could be right.  I was surprised even my own daughter (18) who is an avid gamer (Zelda, Gears, Mortal, Halo) didn't know WiiU was actually another system.  She thought it was just a perpherial for the Wii.   (She doesn't live with me)
