You definitely have to give it a second chance. It almost happened the same to me, I almost gave up in the Citadel, after the first mission. It was boring going from one spot to another doing almost nothing, but once you leave the Citadel...

OT: I'm really excited, I loved 1 and 2! I just hope they keep the mechanics of ME2 and add a few of the options in ME1. That would make it perfect for me.

You should look at the videos in the OP; they pretty much did exactly what you want.
