Sony might not have a choice but to wait until 2014, they're really hurting as the entire company is in red and the stock holders are NOT going to want them to spend a crapload of money on a new console launch just after the PS3 is finally starting to become profitable. They really screwed up with the PS3's launch and further screwed up by REMOVING features on their console(PS2 Backwards Compatibility Anyone? ). In my opinion the PS3 is somewhat of a failure for only selling 1/3 of it's predecessor's sales.

Now, let's look at the competition this gen.

It's only real competitor, the 360, is obviously the weaker powered console.  It had it's own pretty bad launch too, but it has sony on their knees almost the entire generation.  Think about it, all the features the PS3 had added to it in its lifespan? A lot of it came from pressure to "keep up" with the 360 in terms of features.  Microsoft has stalled on adding any real new features and is now starting to focus on next generation, so naturally the PS3 is going to pass it.  The PS3 is a better system overall now and has every right to pass the 360 in terms of sales.

Now, for next gen's competition.

Wii U - The Wii U is only slightly more powerful than the PS3 right now.  I really have no idea what they are going for honestly. Still, the nintendo is a well established brand with some great and fun franchises and could be a big problem if left on the market alone too long.

NextBox - From what I have read, the NextBox is going to be Significantly more powerful than the 360,(6 Core Power7) with rumors of a Dual GPU from AMD. I have also read that they really want to integrate Windows Phone with it somehow and obviously Kinect will be involved somehow.  I've also heard that it will cheaper to produce than the 360 and smaller than it as well(I don't know if this is true, especially with The CPU and Dual GPU if any of that is true). It'll probably use Blu Ray too.  They might go head to head with nintendo and Launch Holiday 2012 with announcing it January 2012 at CES, or they'll launch it in 2013.

If BOTH The NextBox and Wii U launch in 2012, Sony has to launch in 2013 or it's going to be a repeat of this gen. The Playstation brand is much weaker than it was during the PS1/PS2 days, as is Sony overall. If they launch at an affordable price and have the power of the console between the Wii U and NextBox with some crazy features, i think it could win next gen.

i think i found the problem here

i think you should read the whole the thread 1st :)
