if they are already making a wiiu version the unneccessary expense excuse goes out the window as well

I suggested going multi with ps3 would have been wiser, the audience would have been much larger, hence the larger install base argument is not valid

don't underestimate the ps3..this is the system where tales of G version outsold the Wii LT sales in the first week itself, I think it had the potential to surprise us..the system has a big RPG fanbase

the momentum ps3 has over wii at the moment should be pretty evident...it has outsold wii in every week (bar one week maybe :S can't remember) so far this year..and with xillia and FF13-2 the momentum will keep going...either way it should have been wii/wiiU and ps3

I think the answer is rather simple..as your last sentence mentions..ninty and SE must have had a deal from the start if not then a stupid move overall.

I wouldn't disagree that generally JRPGs do better on PS3 than Wii, but DQ is its own entity and sells to millions who don't buy other games in the genre.  As such, I really don't agree that the audience for this game would be wider on PS3, as the audience pretty much transcends boundaries - therefore the bigger the userbase the bigger the audience.  What's the most a PS3 game has sold in Japan?  For the Wii I think NSMB sold about 4m, and while I doubt DQX can match that, it could get within 0.5m.  Final Fantasy is nearly as big as DQ, yet FFXIII (a PS3 exclusive in Japan, I believe) didn't even sell 2m, and no other PS3 game has even sold 1m.  The machine just doesn't have the same pedigree as the Wii when it comes to selling games in the kind of numbers SE will be looking for with DQX.  However, if DQX on Wii doesn't sell at least 2.75m (almost 1m higher than the best-selling PS3 game in Japan), then I will concede that SE probably backed the wrong horse.

Your point about the WIIU port rendering the argument about the cost of porting irrelevent may be a fair one, though I have no idea what the relative costs of porting to WIIU from Wii as opposed to PS3 from Wii might be.  The only thing that I can think of is that perhaps SE expect a significant number of Wii owners to buy it when it first comes out, then buy it again when many of them upgrade to a WiiU.

see your whole first paragraph doesn't make any difference to what I said so I don't even need to address it. you are taking the pov of putting the game on wii vs ps3 in it..my take is putting the game on wii vs wii + ps3. I doubt you have any logical reason to deny that wii+ps3 now and wii u in the future > wii and wiiu for sales. it's simply cuz ninty must have had a deal with them for the game or it really is a stupid move on SE in a business sense

and I don't even need to check, that pedigree bit is a bit of nonsense if I'm gonna be frank with you. FF sold pretty much as FF sells in general throughout the history of the franchise. the series is somewhat equally popular through all regions in the world. hence I'm sure if you check the numbers, overall FF would have sold way more than most DQ titles on sony platforms..heck FF13 (just checked this) is only below the DS/ps2 DQ game sales overall despite having a much much smaller userbase. so like I said, don't underestimate the system. let's see what will happen if it gets an exclusive MH game :) it's just a matter of getting the big games. xillia for example looks like it will be the highest selling tales game since the ps2 destiny series! wii didn't have the pedigree to do that ya know ;)

1)  Sorry, yes - I misread your bit about the 'wider audience' being through multiplat with PS3.  I wrongly read it as though you simply meant the audience would be wider on the PS3.

2) I don't think that's particularly relevant to the release of a DQ game.  As you say, FF is globally popular, but DQ is still very Japan-dependent for its sales, so it's what happens there that counts.

3) The idea that the PS3 is still waiting to get the big games is somewhat amusing.  Try walking a mile in a Wii owner's shoes - DQX is the first big (third party) Wii release for quite a while.

4) I never said the Wii had the pedigree to sell millions of every JRPG.  I said it has much more of a pedigree for selling 3m+ copies of games in Japan (which is what SE will be looking to do with DQX).  The PS3 hasn't shown the pedigree to do that you know.  It has only managed one 1m+ seller, and zero 2m+ sellers.
