Whenever you put a new HDD into a PS3, it forces a format, so you can't switch the HDDs between the two. Like mentioned before, you can hook up the two PS3s with an ethernet cable, which allows you to transfer the contents from one PS3 to another (I'm not sure if the slim PS3 will force a format with this option; it's called Data Transfer Utility or something like that).
