Mario alone may not be enough of a system seller, but I think the company who has 22 of the top 25 best selling games of all time can probably come up with some games that sell some consoles ...
Or to put it another way, Nintendo has a massive library of IPs that have huge demonstrated sales appeal, and over the past several years have been very successful at creating new genres and IPs that also have massive appeal. As a company, they have the potential to bring out a 20+ Million selling game, a couple 10+ million selling games, and many multi-million selling games every year; and their ability to produce platform selling software is equal to several of the next largest publishers combined.
First party Sony software (no matter how well reviewed) is not enough to surpass Nintendo's first party software in broad appeal; and, unless they can convince several large third party publishers to shun the 3DS, Sony will have difficulty unseating Nintendo's handheld dominance.
