It's a toss up between the SNES and PS1 eras. Personally, I think the SNES era has the best single game (FFVI) where as, as a collection the PS1 era slightly edges out over the entire generation. I'd say Tactics is kinda the thing that breaks the balance. SNES had the awful Mystic Quest, and Tactics is as good as any of the main series titles.


I was going to say SNES for the same reason - VI is the best single FF, but if we are including FF: Tactics, I would have to say the combo of it and the 3 main line PS1 games have an edge. FF Tactics was the first PS1 game I owned. As much as it pains a nintendo fan like myself, PS1 wins this one.
