If computers were only for hobbyists, nothing productive would ever get done. Honestly, commercial incentive is the driving force behind computer usage, be it consumer or industrial. People use to buy Altairs and do nothing impressive other than take on the sheer joy of programming it to do a math problem. It wasn't until Jobs and Woz decided to make computers for the everyday person and not the geek (or nerd, if you prefer), that computer technology really took off.
