The other day my friend(who works at gamestop) and I had this conversation about genres and how they are today compared to about(10+)years ago. just to sum it up here is what we thought. 1)RPG's- Slowly dying, mostly JRPG's, not saying they won't be around, but people who we mostly talk to about RPG's are atleast in there late teens or older. it seems the younger generation isn't into this type of gaming

2)Shooters- becoming the most popular amoung the gaming community young and old.(about 7+) we thought that the main reason why this genre is taking off so well is because people want to show the dominace(mostly towards seasoned/veteran gamers) and for the younger gen, think that plaing rated M games is a quick way to be the illusionary "hardcore gamer"

3)PRated M games- attract the younger gen gamers with their mindlesss violence(not that we don't also enjoy it) but again he just laughs at the attempts kids try to pull in order to buy a rated M copy of DMC4, Prototype, GTAIV, etc. or how they try to convice their parents how they play these games all the time. or how many kids approached me asking me to buy them some M rated game. me mostly talked about these topics. so what are you opinion on these genre's or any others that come to mind? I haven't been around all this gaming gen(born 1991) so your opinions/thoughts are welcomed.

JRPGs have been in the worst condition since their inception this generation. I would say they have quickly been dying. Besides the old franchises, there is little in terms of new and good (70% and above) ones releasing. Two generations ago, the PS1 literally had dozens of them, coming from a host of different companies. SNES had many RPGs as well. The DS still receives some good JRPG/ RPG-esque games though.

Shooters are the most popular, but I myself have grown sick of them, mainly because they are used as a safety blanket. Instead of developing new gameplay ideas and features, companies rely on a saturated genre to make a guaranteed buck. I don't think I have seen genres remain popular for more than one generation though. FPS/TPS games will be around next gen of course, but I think they may be in the JRPG situation where only the tried and true games exist, with maybe 2-4 new FPS series arising in popularity.

Rated M games really concern this hardcore/casual bullshit feeding the industry into thinking senseless violence/action is cool; the thing that makes people who are not gamers look down upon the hobby. As a younger kid, I never played M games solely because of their rating. If they were fun and just happened to be M-rated I enjoyed them. Now the violence is being used as some distorted "hardcore" initiation ritual. Makes gamers ignorant in my opinion.

Oh yeah, I was born 1992.
