Don't forget, that PS2 numbers are somewhat inflated by being boosted by still selling into the next generation (so are the NES's, to a lesser degree). A better comparison would be to compare the PS2's marketshare at the end of 2005 with the NES's at the end of 1989.

In North America, at least, I've never met anyone who's even heard of the Master System or the 7800. Most people think the Genesis was Sega's first console. I think the 2600 was a bigger "competitor" to the NES than the SMS.
