My XP machine HAS been running for 7 years (24/7/365 without issue), I've never had a virus, it runs better than when I bought it and it's NEVER been reinstalled. Period. That's because I know how to keep it running that way.

How did you do that?

Just maintain it properly, I'd imagine. Run CCleaner now and then to clear out the registry, defrag once a month, don't be a dickhead on the internet and don't go installing loads of crapware. Easy.

That's it! You, my friend, have just uncovered the secret to the universe! It's actually pretty easy to keep it running like new. CCleaner is actually my favorite utility, clean out junk files & registry clean every 3-6 months depending on usage, set up a little script to auto-defrag every month, don't sign up for free online poker from ads on porno sites, don't download 'Free Smileys!!' or 'Starware', or Cupon whatever, etc. I ran XP on my work laptop for 3 1/2 years without issue before installing 7, and also on my work desktop for 4 years without problems before a power surge killed my mobo. The only BSOD I've seen on my own computers is when a stick of RAM went bad in my incredibly old Dell desktop the company I work for gave me and when I had an NVidia video card go bad from overclocking.

People that complain about their computers running slllloooowww and having viruses generally treat them like crap. If you have a car, are you going to get it's oil changed every 3000 and drive it carefully, or are you going to never maintain it and drive it like an indy car (and run it into walls for fun)? The choice is yours! Oh, and porn will kill your computer... "Click OK for free access" actually means "Click here to purposefully f#$% up your computer you doofus". This has been a public service announcement.
