This is probably your primary faulty assumption - the average age of DS owners is nearly as high as that of Wii owners, which is to say adults. The DSi as an SKU is not intended for kids, it's intended for more upstream consumers who would actually use its fancy cameras and care about downloadable content.
I wouldn't wory about it. The Lite isn't going to be phased out anytime soon.
