It could be said that PS1 didn't have as strong competition (though the N64 launched very well), but it could also be said that PS1 didn't have the support of the PlayStation brand, whereas PS3 does. Still the same basic point. A good launch doesn't necessarily dictate long-term success, nor does a bad launch dictate long-term failure.
