Mac start-up problems

Okay, this is hard. I think we'll end up calling the Mac support line, even though it's not free.

 

Some more info:

The message is:

You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the Restart button.

 

We turn it on, get the little apple on the middle of the screen, it chimes, and then is says the message (as I said above).

There's a chance it's a kernal panic (whatever that is...), as I've found some people who have some similar problems.

 

Thanks for all help so far (but unfortunately, he can't find the disc that came with the mac).
