MMORPGs are critical to the PC industry now. WoW is keeping it alive - take out ALL WoW sales + expansion packs, and I think you would see a pretty sorry sight.
MS has also started pushing for a revival - they see a market opportunity there, and will take it thanks to Windows OS.
