Depends on which count you go by but each person is going to choose the count that gives the result they prefer. All I know is that the US has never finished lower than third by gold or total medals in any Olympics they've attended and have more first place finishes by both gold and total counts than any other country. The US also has more than double the total and gold medals of the next closest competitors in the summer Olympics and is 2nd in Total and Gold for the Winter Olympics (damn you Norway! =P).
