One more clue and then I'm moving on.

#47

  • Nexus...
  • ...binds the northern lands together...
  • ...and ties the souls of all would-be demon hunters so they cannot leave.
  • There are six archstones in the nexus, but only five of them are intact, the sixth one being shattered and unusable.
  • On the topmost level of the nexus, one can find the only remaining Monumental.
  • The Old One is contained within the Nexus.

I'll start throwing out some clues here

50
- Red > Green. Green > Blue. Blue > Red. Purple > all.

49
- There could be up to 4 previously unvisited countries on your itinerary.

48
- Those precious collectible gemstones are found in the levels here, rather than in bonus stages like in its more powerful namesake.

47
- Robotic animals take each other out in a title from on the biggest developers out there (who were going under a different name at the time).

Still only 2 games found? Next round of hints then...

#50: Probably the best PC-exclusive fighting game there is.

  1. Giants robots are duking it out
  2. In the story mode, you can level up both your pilot and machine independently

#49: Unlike in the other games of the series, no transformations here.

  1. Instead of transformations, you got stereotypical pirate equipment
  2. The player's main attack is whipping her hair, though a powerful kick can be learned later, plus some more equipment-based attacks.

#48: Looks a lot like Metroid, but isn't Metroid

  1. Originally released on the venerable C64, though ports to other machines followed very quickly
  2. The Original came out in 1990 and really pushed the C64 to it's limits. Apaprt from the gameplay, it's fondly remembered for it's soundtrack.

#46: Ever wanted to shoot your console? In this game, you can in the final level.

  1. A Sega game where you can meet characters like Sonic, Alex Kidd or Samba de Amigo
  2. The game id for the most part a simulation with RPG combat, though instead of actually fighting you insult or encourage the enemies you encounter in dungeons.

#44: Lead your people from the Stone Age to the Space Age.

49 is a Shantae game, but I've only played the first one, so maybe Pirate's Curse just going by the name.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse it is!

Ok so I was actually done with my honorable mentions but while looking through my screenshots I stumbled upon some great ones for a few of my #100-#51 games, so I thought I might as well give those games a graphic even if they don't get a full write up.

And now for the actual next entry on my list: Alan Wake II lands itself at originally my lowest spot for the simple reason that I'm actually still playing it. Honestly it could end up anywhere from #50 to #5 the way it's going right now. In retrospect I should have known that a game that competed with Baldur's Gate III and Tears of the Kingdom for GotY awards would be something truly special - it's pretty much Twin Peaks: The Return mixed with The Last of Us and The Stanley Parable and that's one hell of a cocktail. I'm almost a little scared to ruin the experience by playing too much or too little but either way it's already had some insane high points that make it one of the most interesting games I've played in a long while.

Change YoY: -3   My Rating: 9.1/10

So, what exactly is there left for me to say about Super Mario Bros. 3 that just about everyone else hasn't already repeated ad nauseam over the last 30+ years? One of the most legendary and beloved video games of all time, often still considered by many to be among the very best 2D platformers ever created, and a game whose influence can still be seen and felt in the genre to this day. Yeah, I suppose it's an all right little game. I also think this Mario character might have some potential.

I do still remember when I got Super Mario Bros. 3 somewhere around 1993 or 94, a few years after its original release in the PAL regions. My cousin was no longer into video games that much, and he was getting rid of his NES games, so obviously I took all of them off his hands. Though there were quite a few very good games among them, like Kirby's Adventure, for example, it was SMB3 that remains my favourite of the entire NES library. Even by today's standards, it remains a near flawless game in a lot of ways. The platforming is precise, the colourful graphics are some of the best on the console, and most importantly, it's simply just fun to play. If I was ranking this game based on pure gameplay, Super Mario Bros. 3 would probably be quite a bit higher on the list. As it stands, it's one of the few games on my list that are there almost entirely on the merits of their gameplay, and one that's still worth playing today.

Looks like more hints are in order

#50: Probably the best PC-exclusive fighting game there is.

  1. Giants robots are duking it out
  2. In the story mode, you can level up both your pilot and machine independently
  3. There's a hyper mode that makes all the actions super-fast and combos possible that are otherwise totally impossible. Oh, and there are scrap moves that totally destroy the enemy robot.

  3. After the success of the C64 and Amiga versions, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Atari ST followed quickly afterwards in 1990, until it arrived also on the Megadrive/Genesis until it finally released on the PC Engine/Turbografx and the Gameboy in 1991.

  3. Your job in this game? Lead a video game company to dominate the market with great games and a great console, and defeat the rival company.

#43: Lead your people from the Stone Age to the Space Age.

  1. Unlike Civilization, this God Game is in real time

#47 (Yeah I forgot that one initially, sorry): A PC pinball game with 3 tables and a horror movie level design

#42: A pirate adventure game where you're out to find Big Whoop.
