Last hints for a couple of the games.

#46: Ever wanted to shoot your console? In this game, you can in the final level.

  1. A Sega game where you can meet characters like Sonic, Alex Kidd or Samba de Amigo
  2. The game id for the most part a simulation with RPG combat, though instead of actually fighting you insult or encourage the enemies you encounter in dungeons.
  3. Your job in this game? Lead a video game company to dominate the market with great games and a great console, and defeat the rival company.
  4. This game is totally GAGA.
  5. In the game, you play Sega and has only 2% market share at the start. Weeks after the release if the game, the Dreamcast, where the game was released upon in Japan got discontinued, hence why it never came out overseas.

#43: Lead your people from the Stone Age to the Space Age.

  1. Unlike Civilization, this God Game is in real time
  2. As a God Game, you have make some godly interventions sometimes like healing your citizens, striking UFOs with lightning strikes or protecting them under a protective dome
  3. The inhabitants of the planet that you develop are called Nuggets who like Rayman don't seem to have limbs.

#47 (Yeah I forgot that one initially, sorry): A PC pinball game with 3 tables and a horror movie level design

  1. The 3 tables are called Castle, Dungeon and Laboratory
  2. In the Castle multiball, the castle gate tower becomes a giant angry face with the gate becoming teeth and it constantly says "FEED ME!"

#42: A pirate adventure game where you're out to find Big Whoop. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, as found by Vecnoid_Outcast

  1. Unlike pretty much all the other games in the series, this one doesn't include any insult swordfighting.

#41: That title music, it will never leave IT WILL NEVER LEAVE!

  1. Neither will the music from the Moon level, which is an iconic tune from the game.

#40: This game series from Stardock got often called a successor to Master of Magic, here in it's third iteration.

48. Turrican?

46. Segagaga?

41. Ducktales?

Around the Network

This year when redoing my list of 50, a few games got kicked out of or narrowly missed being in the Top 50. These are my Honorable Mentions, in alphabetical order.

  • Age of Empires III - Lots of fun back in the day, but I'm not going to include this in my Top 50 without checking to see if Definitive Edition holds up first.
  • Civilization IV - Used to be my favorite strategy game of all time, but going back and playing it has felt increasingly shallow in recent years.
  • Danganronpa - A fun murder mystery story, but I have to test if replays hold up.
  • Dishonored - This would probably be in my Top 50 if I were good enough at FPS's to fully explore the game's nuances.
  • Dragon Quest XI - Will probably get on this list when I finish the postgame.
  • Final Fantasy IV - My favorite mainline FF, but I prefer some other classic Squenix games.
  • Legend of Zelda - The NES original holds up... when using a guide.
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - No real complaints, this is probably #51.
  • Mega Man X - One of the more solid SNES games I ever played, but again my lack of skill prevents me from bringing out the best of this game.
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 - Though the story has gotten better with time, the gameplay hasn't.
  • Portal - A great slice of game, but it could've developed its mechanics more before the sequel.
  • Prey (2017) - This is another one I want to replay a bit before potentially placing it in my Top 50.
  • Rollercoaster Tycoon - Created a Tycoon genre boom for a reason, but replaying missions is a bit slow since you HAVE to complete the time limit before getting judged.
  • Team Fortress 2 - The rare online-focused game to keep my interest.
  • Tropico 4 - My favorite SimCity

All 3 are correct, congratulations!

Guessed by @Louie_86

The first game on my list to recieve the purple color for Epic rarity, though I did consider starting it with Pokémon Ruby & Crystal already, which arguably deserve it just for how much I've played them. Either way Xillia 2 is a sick game that stands out to me as one of the best of the series, even despite things like reusing most of its areas which didn't really bother me because it had so different a structure. It's one of relatively few times the series has hit a high point on both story and gameplay and despite a few flaws I gotta say it's a very fitting game to be the first to be called Epic on this list.

2025 OpenCritic Prediction Leagues

(I had to reorder some numbers again. My bad for thinking I could remember the list of the top of my head)

#44 - In this mostly great game one mediocre plot twist is the changing of a letter in the main characters name.

  • Most characters in the game have codenames with one letter and number

#43 - Watermelons beware.

  • Not Fruit Ninja, but my steam review for the game reads: "Fruit Ninja on steroids."

#42 - Isn't it a little weird to call the first game in a series Origins?

#40 - If you look up you'll see a giant nose

  • On a certain celestial object

Change YoY: NEW!   My Rating: 9.1 / 10

The first of four new games on my list this year. Even though the Dark Souls series, and Soulsborne games in general, are some of my favourite types of games, it took me a very long time to get around to playing the game that essentially invented and codified the whole genre. I've never played the original on PS3, as Dark Souls was my first game of its kind, and I just never got around to going back to Demon's Souls until earlier this year when I played the remake on PS5. For the most part it is well-deserving of its reputation as an excellent game, and most of the shortcomings are a result of later souls games improving upon the formula in various ways. The atmosphere the game creates is still impeccable, and the world design has held up remarkably well.

Interestingly, Demon's Souls is a far less challenging game than the later FromSoftware titles in the genre. Most of the bosses are relatively easy, and simple in concept, and the main challenge in a lot of them comes from the extended boss runs should you die to one. The most challenging boss encounter to me were the Maneaters, and that was in large part due to the arena rather than anything the boss itself did, as most of my deaths on it were due to falling off the arena. Even the final (proper) boss I beat on the first attempt without much issue. Overall, it's the weakest of the FromSoftware souls games, the simpler gameplay, less interesting bosses (though there are exceptions), and the world tendency mechanic essentially cutting you out of a lot of story and characters hurt it in comparison, but make no mistake, Demon's Souls is still a wonderful experience.

More hints!

#45 - Gorilla, Zebra, Ostrich, Elephant, Snake.
#44 - A leaker recently claimed that this 2004 game will get a remake in the future, with a gaudy Unreal Engine 5 coat of paint, no doubt.
#43 - The franchise started by this game has come a long way, with many sequels and side projects, including a musou spin-off just this month.
#42 - The auteur behind this Switch title just spent over 100 minutes selling us on his new game.
#41 - You could call this game PlayStation All-Stars Bot-tle Royale.

45 - Donkey Kong Bananza?

And 43 is The Legend of Zelda I believe?

EDIT - misread 42 - I think that's Smash Bros Ultimate?

Correct on all three!
