Well if we want to take it to extreme (without looking the maker or generations and making sense) then we can go PS2+DS. But yeah, the Wii + DS is the one that is both highest and making sense at the same time (home + handheld for 7th gen and both from Nintendo). However I don't know if there will be a consoles reaching this high numbers lifetime in the near future.

Secondly, I don't see the merit in doing Switch vs. two competitors' consoles combined. Switch vs. DS already provides enough perspective to gauge whether or not Switch can sell 160m+. Switch vs. PS3+360 or Switch vs. PS4 + XB1 would paint exactly the same picture, so they'd be redundant comparisons for VGC as a sales website. Of course, users in the forums are free to make any kind of comparisons, but for VGC articles it would look very arbitrary.

Through 64 months we have:

Switch: ~110m
DS: ~122m
PS3 + 360: ~115m
PS4 + XB1: ~135m

But while PS4 + XB1 post the highest LTD by a significant margin, we already know that they will finish below PS3 + 360, because that's how different sales curves can be. Regardless of what we compare Switch against, ultimately it will always come down to the question of the longevity of Switch, not what we compare Switch against. That's why comparisons against Sony and Microsoft consoles won't tell us anything that we don't already know anyway.

I think seeing the different sales curves would make it interesting but only Switch vs. DS being needed is fair.

ignore him he's just a hater

No it's not pointless, as other users suggested the same. It gives better perspective and also put every optimistic opinion of 160+ and 180 and 200M to the test. What's wrong about this ? So comparing Switch to the Wii U + 3DS wasn't pointless but this now is pointless? And why I would make Switch looks bad in comparison with this ? this is giving a perspective of exactly how will perform and if it has a shot of reaching 160 or 170M. Why this has to be bad thing ?

Also no, I am not a hater, I even told in one of my posts that I like the switch, what's your problem ? And why you all are turning against me and doing it personal ? Because of one prediction that you all don't agree ? There are many other users here with other predictions, yet no one naming them haters or whatever. Why not name everyone who gave and is giving Switch not more than 150M a hater ?

So it's not pointless couple of people to give switch 160M+ even 180M and 200M lifetime predictions, but when someone suggest a comparison with ~170M sales line it's pointless. ? It comes only in your eyes. You can't know what I am thinking in my head for suggesting this comparison to make thoughts, and also it is normal when one system does well to climb up the comparisons and to get better and better competition - in switch's case comparison to DS, and for better perspective and for people who are saying or are so sure about Switch winning this one - it's good to have battle with ~170M sales line. Why not ? Are you so unconfident in switch's ability ? or just not sure about your and many other optimistic 160+M predictions ? There isn't need for me to make it look bad, this was never my intention and even if it was, what is done is done you can't take it away. When one systems sells good you can't take it's success regardless what are you saying about it. Switch has already done very well and I've applaud for it numerous times, when talking about it's sales performance.

@Shatts Now go and tell @Alex_The_Hedgehog and @Norion that are haters because they think the same as me (that the comparison is not pointless and that Switch won't outsell the DS and @curl-6 go tell @Norion that it's pointless. You won't. Why ? Because you turn only to me personal, but when other people telling the same their opinion is not pointless and @ShattsNow they are not haters. But if it's me then my things are pointless and I am big bad hater, and what was the other thing ? Quickrick alt. The same thing as @peachbuggy said - I've been talked to my self in my sales thread (with the every week post updates so that the thread move up) but yet @PAOerfulone doing the exact same thing in his sales thread and @peachbuggy not mentioning him at all. So only I am the worst, and everyone else may take or make the same things or actions or have same or similar opinions as me but they are not bad, only I am. And then you tell me it's not personal, yes I see who and how makes his statements and I can see who is making his posts personal and who not. There are others that may not agree with me, but haven't gone through the personal line. You with your posts go through that line - @Shatts, @curl-6 and @peachbuggy Which as far as I know is againts the rules of the forum.

It is not personal, I have nothing against you as a person, and I have never singled you out.

I would respond the same way if any member of this forum made the posts I have responded to, and I really don't think I have been rude or unreasonable, or broken the forum's rules.

If Switch beats the DS and still has gas in the tank, then the comparisons you suggest would be the next logical step, but that is a massive if that I for one think is highly unlikely. For right now, it feels just way out of proportion. At any rate, trunks has made his decision.

There's no reason for this to be hostile. At the end of the day, this is just a forum for talking about a hobby we share. Let's just relax.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023. (And over 130 million lifetime)

Seeing as Wii+DS isn't even remotely reachable for any system, and those systems had quite unique sales curves, I don't think it makes all that much sense.

If you really another home+handheld you could recommend PS4+Vita, but don't won't last too long into next year.

That's why we are giving firstly PS3&360/PS4&XB1. It's obvious it can't do Wii+DS numbers. But if it beats the DS, then those 2 comparisons are the next in line.

I am definitely seeing plenty of Series S available whenever I go to any shop that sells consoles.  (I live in the US.)  PS5 is still very hard to find, but based on scalping prices, I think supply is close to meeting demand.  I don't expect shortages in the US to last much longer for PS5.

What I am really interested in seeing is if XBox will adapt their strategy somewhat and start to produce more Series X systems.  XBox really wants people to get Gamepass, and the Series X is kind of against that strategy.  At the same time, the market is saying that it still wants more systems with a disc drive included.  If they make more Series X, then they will probably outcompete PS5 in the US by a good margin, but it goes against their Gamepass strategy.  Or they may just keep Series X scarce and double down on the Gamepass strategy, but then PS5 will get more market share in the US.

It will be interesting to see what XBox does next.
