The challenge Sony will face in Japan ist that in a few years its only viable console will be the PS5. We often compare PS3 and PS4 to potential PS5 sales, but Sony had a very successful handheld during the PS3 era and a moderately successful handheld during the PS4 era. In the past, there were always multiple Sony systems for Japanese developers to do cross platform releases on. Devs could release a game on PS3 + PSP, or PS4 + Vita, or even on PS3 + PS4 + Vita for example. But in less than two years, Sony's whole Japanese install base will consist solely of PS5 and thus be lower than 5m probably.

I expect many Japanese third party developers to cling to the PS5 as long as possible, but in the end it'll be harder than ever for them to release Playstation exclusive games.

yeah, when companies that have been staunchly playstation start to migrate like compile heart to multiplat you know things are going badly...

Ugh, 5.956 million, shame.

Damn you Scots Japanese people, they ruined Scotland Nintendo.

Fearnot, there are still the last 4 days of 2020.

If the PS5 doesn't recover quickly (like the PS4 did during and after it's first holiday season), then I think we can compare the console with the Wii U in Japan. For those who don't know, the Wii U early on sold better than the PS4 in Japan, but Sony managed to turn the tables around after a year.

I'm thinking Vita might be a closer point of comparison; it sold more than Wii U, but less than PS4, as PS5 seems likely to do.

I didn't remember Vita sales, so I didn't mention it. But I agree that the Vita may very well be the best comparison to the PS5 in Japan.

it will probably start like the vita and end like the ps4, at least thats my take on it
