Like I have been saying. Nintendo is selling gangbusters without a strong holiday lineup, so why launch those games now? They can release them later when Switch needs them. Last year they had Pokemon and this year they have AoC, they are barely under YoY last year.

I wouldnt consider the past few weeks numbers as gangbusters, especially compared to 2018 and 2019

Past few weeks as in 3 or 4 weeks?

They are only down 100k or 50k YoY from an already great 2019.

Meanwhile still UP 20k or 100k on 2018.

Around the Network

It's like I said in another thread, Nintendo doesn't have an incentive to have a huge holiday in Japan. Still they will do very well due to New Horizon, Ring Fit and Momotaro - just not at the same level as last year when they had Pokemon Sword / Shield and a recently launched Lite model. I believe they would ship around 2.25 million hardware for the quarter, so a little over 1.35 million in the next 5 weeks(counting Week 1, 2021 as the last shipment).

I continue to believe that we would see record breaking numbers in other places which Nintendo prioritized liked North America, Europe, East Asia - this is mainly because Japan is a lock for Nintendo and they will have a lot of momentum in 2021, where I expect them to outperform 2020 for the first two quarters due to a far greater number of games. Considering their Software sales this year I don't really think they would mind if they end up with a little over 6 million units in 2020, that's still much better than 3DS ever did. The other thing I still strongly believe is that 2021 > 2020 in terms of hardware sales.

The main idea behind this is to show strength in other markets where the PS5/XSX are more relevant compared to Japan.

They underwhelming Switch holiday line up is affecting more Japan than in west

It depends, are those sales due to lower demand or lower stocks for the Switch?

I saw a post of a post saying the stock situation was fine in Japan.

Momotaro is yet another demonstration that there's nothing stopping third parties from selling well on Switch, they just have to actually provide desirable products.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

Actual holiday weeks start Week 50. Numbers for November are fine considering the lack of a big Holiday game. Black Friday/Cyber Monday aren't part of Japanese culture

the holidays in east asia start md december and go on for a while, japan actually has the shortest holiday period in mid december to end of january.

most others last untill lunar new year

"Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! Ranked 1st for three consecutive weeks. It is a title that can be expected not only at the end of the year but also at the New Year. Derby Stallion ranked in 2nd place and is the latest work in the series for first time in 6 years.

At other new releases, Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends & the Secret Fairy is in 3rd and 4th place and Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate" is in 7th place. We also expect that the 5th place Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition will be sold for a long time together with the Switch version."

Momotaro is going to be this holiday's evergreen with New Horizon and Ring Fit Adventure, Konami's board-game is looking like it will surpass 1 million physical before the end of the year. And it's very likely that it end ups as Konami's best selling game in Japan of all time unless they prematurely release a sequel.

As I mentioned in the COMG thread a few weeks ago before the launch, 1.5 million is the floor for Momotaro. https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/post.php?id=9247616

In Japan at least it looks like Momotaro more than anything will be the Switch's de facto "holiday game" in the absence of a big Nintendo release.
Here's hoping between that and the evergreens Switch still manages a strong Christmas season.
