Switch vs PS3 Sales Comparison in Europe - Switch Lead Grows in August 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 3.

Switch Vs. PS3 Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 121,015 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 898,900 - Switch

Total Lead: 1,449,592 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 16,698,636

PS3 Total Sales: 15,249,044

August 2020 is the 42nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch grew its lead by 121,015 units when you align the launches of it with the PlayStation 3. In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the PlayStation 3 by 898,900 units. The Switch is currently ahead of the PlayStation 3 by 1.45 million units.

The PlayStation 3 launched in Europe in March 2007, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

The 42nd month for the Nintendo Switch in Europe is August 2020 and for the PlayStation 3 it is August 2010. The Switch has sold 16.70 million units, while the PlayStation 3 has sold 15.25 million units during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 3 did not reach current Switch sales until month 45.

The PlayStation 3 sold 34.99 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 18.29 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the PlayStation 3.

This was actually really close for a long time.  Obviously Switch got a boost from COVID recently.  Still, I wouldn't be surprised if Switch widens its lead during the holidays.

PS4 vs Xbox One in the US Sales Comparison - PS4 Lead Continues to Grow in August 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

PS4 Vs. XOne US:

Gap change in latest month: 150,641 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 950,655 - PS4

Total Lead: 5,262,659 - PS4

PS4 Total Sales: 33,982,521

Xbox One Total Sales: 28,719,862

In August 2020, the gap in the US between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One grew in favor of the PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 4 sold 150,641 more units than the Xbox One in the last month.  The PlayStation 4 has also sold 950,655 more units in the last 12 months.  The PlayStation 4 currently leads by 5.26 million units.

The PlayStation 4 launched in the US on November 15, 2013, while the Xbox One launched on November 22, 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 33.98 million units, while the Xbox One has sold 28.72 million units. The PlayStation 4 reached the current Xbox One sales back in March 2019.

The PS4 and Xbox One have sold a combined 62.70 million units in the US. The PS3 and Xbox 360 sold a combined 72.13 million units lifetime in the US. The PS4 and Xbox One need to sell another 9.43 million units to reach the sales of the previous generation.

360's gonna hold onto its throne; not only better legs in general but also an extra holiday season still to come before its replacement.

PS4 is holding actually pretty well at this point in time against the 360 .. only 55k, with 360 in 2012 the next gen wasn't even announced.. With these sales until now, I think PS4 is having pretty good chance of reaching at least 40M in US total. If they do a pricecut to 199$ I think PS4 can hit 45M and beat 360 to the punch.
