PS4 vs Wii in the US Sales Comparison - PS4 Closes Gap in August 2020

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Wii.

PlayStation 4 Vs. Wii US:

Gap change in latest month: 171,089 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,498,569 - PS4

Total Lead: 7,160,792

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 33,982,521

Wii Total Sales: 41,143,313

August 2020 is the 82nd month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared with the Nintendo Wii during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 4 has caught up to the Wii by 171,089 units and in the last 12 months outsold the Wii by 2.50 million units. The Wii currently leads by 7.16 million units.

Both consoles launched in November in the US. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holidays for the two consoles do lineup.

The 82nd month for the PlayStation 4 is August 2020, while for the Wii it is August 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 33.98 million units, while the Wii sold 41.14 million units during the same timeframe.

The Wii sold units 41.70 million lifetime in the US, therefore the PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 7.72 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the Wii.

Still all comes down to how Sony handle PS4 post-replacement. It's a big hill to climb.

Bet with Liquidlaser: I say PS5 and Xbox Series will sell more than 56 million combined by the end of 2023.

If it does happen it likely won't be until 2022. It all depends on how long Sony keeps PS5 on the market. 3DS was just discontinued, 3 and a half years after the Switch launched.

This monthly series compares the aligned US Nintendo Switch sales with the combined Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii U sales.

Switch Vs. 3DS and Wii U USA:

Gap change in latest month: 380,526 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,759,583 - Switch

Total Lead: 3,539,837 - Switch

Switch Total Sales: 21,428,833

3DS and Wii U Total Sales: 17,888,996

August 2020 is the 42nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch when compared to the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U during the same timeframe by 380,526 units. In the last 12 months, the gap has grown in favor of the Switch by 3.76 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the 3DS and Wii U by 3.54 million units.

The 3DS launched in March 2011 in the US and the Wii U launched in November 2012, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. The holiday periods between the Switch and 3DS lineup, however, the Wii U holiday is offset from the Switch.

The Switch has sold 21.43 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 17.89 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii U has been off the market for a few years, while the 3DS is still on the market. 3DS production has ended, however, the handheld is still selling around 1,000 units per week.

This is long over. By August global PS4 shipments for the fiscal year should have reached 3m out of the forecasted 9m and at the moment there's good reason to believe that the forecast is very much in line with the production capacities, so higher than expected demand won't result in higher sales, but rather occasional sellouts in one country or the other.

~6m global shipments left this fiscal year, ~5m in the following fiscal year, ~2m the rest of the way. That's a total of ~13m globally; the PS4 trails the Wii by 7.72m in the USA. So in order to catch the Wii, the PS4 would have to sell the rest of the way proportionally far better in the USA than it has sold over the course of its life so far.

Or we take the method of estimating sell-through the rest of the way. Four months left in 2020 with incoming launch of its successor.

September: ~250k
October: ~200k
November: ~750k
December: ~500k

This gets you 1.7m, but we can make it easier and round up all the way to 36.0m LTD by the end of 2020 (so a total of 2.02m in the remaining four months). Then in 2021 we go with a generous 150k per month from January to October (1.5m), plus 500k each in November and December. That makes 38.5m LTD by the end of 2021. Software support for the PS4 will be on its last legs in 2022, so let's make that 50k per month from January to October (500k) and 200k each in November and December. LTD by the end of 2022 is 39.4m. Then we squeeze out 600k for the rest of its life to get to a flat 40m which is still 1.7m short of the Wii.

Either way, it's not going to add up for the PS4.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV (360+PS3) would outsell SSBB. I was wrong.
