To be honest, I never rated Linus' technical knowledge very highly. He seems like someone who knows his way around the a few websites to order computer parts, but does he even have a computer science degree? Has he worked as a software developer? Does he work on Linux in his spare time or something?
That he was wrong about something highly technical does not surprise me. That he thought he could talk authoritatively about something he has never used or seen the specs of... doesn't surprise me either...
Linus himself isn't an expert, even as yes, he is quite educated on most of the stuff anyway.
You can always see his team taking the lead when things gets really complicated/complex, to the extent you can see him something say in his videos: so I helped with something?
Anthony is usually the one to take care of the highly technical software bits, and guys like Alex to try very cool and experimental things on the hardware side of things.
Linus is the boss tho, so it was nice of him to apologize for his team too, as his actions reflects upon them.
It was a case of misinformation by Linus that led to some pretty out of place personal commentaries from him about Tim, if it was only a lack of technical expertise it would be way less problematic for him.
