I guess sometimes the joke isn't that obvious.

Not sure where the joke was, but I don't think they bought the game at all.
They clearly decided to take a swing at golf and joined a new club instead.

Splatoon 2 also had a decent boost. Possibly people who bought Switch for AC, finally getting a bit bored of it and picking up other popular titles.

Nice performance of TLOU2 there.
AC falling a bit, maybe the end of its reign, maybe it will slip out of the top 3 soon.

Either that, or not enough supply for AC, so they had to choose something else to buy and play.

What games will keep Animal Crossing out of the first 3?

TLOU will drop quite a bit week 2.
Ring Fit does what stock allows which seems to be on a similar level every week.
Clubhouse games will also not keep up.
Release schedule for the next weeks is pretty weak.
If anything Animal Crossing will go back to the top.

I think it can slip out of the top 3 not forever but just dip once in a while. 

And for Paper Mario i'm not scared i'm sure the drought will be in favor of the game.
