Is this the guy that made his own studio, which made one really bad game, and then instantly shut down as a result?

That doesn't exactly scream "Please Marcus, come back, have some money, and your own team at 343 to do with as you see fit."

Of course he'd be "happy" to come back and work on Halo now that he flamed out of what he actually wanted to do, and MS is in a good position, throwing money around at everyone. I'm about as interested in having this guy work on Halo again as I am in having Cliffy B work on Gears again...which is to say...no thanks.

Yeah, but he also had significant roles on Halo 1 - 3 and Reach.

I'm not ready to hold one bad game against someone with such an amazing career, he knows Halo better than most, he almost certainly knows Halo better than a lot of people at 343 and that isn't a dig but a simple fact, he is after-all one of the creators of its universe and has been there from the very start.

Creating your own studio is hard, trying to come up with a successful game is very hard, especially with little financial backing, I know Disintegration was bad, I felt it looked like a weird mashup of certain trends, looked a bit like Titanfall x Destiny, shit happens.

Still, I stand by that he would be a great leader of a Halo team in 343's publishing department, he fully understands the Halo universe better than most, he would work well with Joe, he knows what folk like and dislike about Halo, he has experience managing teams (was Creative Director on Halo Reach) but one of his main roles was Art Director and sadly we lost the Halo Wars 2 Art Director (part of the publishing team) so I'd like to replace that dude with someone equally as good.

Return to Halo may be good for him too, from a developer standpoint, it removes most those worries of keeping a studio alive, securing funding, he doesn't have to chase some weird trends or do a weird mash up, he can just focus on making a good Halo game.

And a lot of these titles are not developed by 343 anyway, just managed by them/overseen, such as Halo Wars 2 where 343's only input was Writing and Art, the core gameplay was all Creative Assembly. That would likely remain true for future spinoffs but I hope it doesn't for FPS, I hope FPS spinoffs are done in-house and I trust Marcus still with that.

Like Joseph Staten, he's currently Head of Creative, basically co-managing the studio with Bonnie Ross, he has never had a role like this before, like Marcus he was only Creative Director once, and Joe's not exactly done much lately either but folk are hyped as fuck about him being back at Halo and for good reason, cause of his history with the series, cause whenever he speaks Halo you can see the passion, you can see he just understands it, he's well liked in the developer scene, etc.

My main issue with Cliffy is his personality.

Once Joe leaves, I do worry, 343 has been poorly managed now for almost its entire life.

Can't really look at Joe and Marcus the same way. Joe might not exactly have been doing big things of late, but that seems to be a clear choice on his part. He was simply content working in smaller roles, on various projects.

Marcus might know Halo, but what fresh new ideas can he bring to the table? The game he made with his failed studio wasn't simply a failure of overambition, underfunding, lack of polish, or a matter of it being rough around the edges. It was pretty much just bad from top to bottom. No part of it was well executed. I'm not taking anything away from his past work, or saying he can't ever do great work again. But coming off THAT kind of flat out terrible project, which falls more or less entirely on your shoulders...I'm not putting you in charge of any kind of AAA production.

He's gonna have to take a smaller role, and work his way back up, or go and ship a couple indie games that don't suck ass.

Tbh I doubt it, this confirms Grubb's leak and he said this new IP is smaller in scale and more of a experimental title/familiarising themselves with Unreal Engine 5. Gears 6 could be the last one but I don't think this new IP hints at that being the case.

I'd be fine with Gears 6 being the last Gears game as an epic finale. At least the last Gears game for many years to let the franchise rest for a bit.

Agreed. I think 6 being the big finale and let it rest for the remainder of the generation. Reboot next gen.

Yeah I don't get it, when Gears 6 will release it will be like 5 years or more after G5 and possible the only Gears main title we will see getting a release. Gears is one of those pillars of the Xbox consoles.

What could this be? Looks like a new feature coming to Game Pass Ultimate.

Play the game through xCloud while it downloads to your console maybe?

"Through time and space"

That's a quest in the Witcher 3. Could be coming back to GP?

I would enjoy ships aswel :=o

MS needs to buy Skybox Labs after Halo Infinite launches, they have a great history with MS already and they need support studios. It’s a shame that they aren’t able to get Asobo.

There is a few Bioware veterans setting up new studios as well that Microsoft should keep an eye on, there is two in Canada that I know of right now.

Yellow Brick Games - Led by Mike Laidlaw (Creative Director of the Dragon Age Franchise, Lead Designer, Lead Writer of Jade Empire).

Humanoid Studios - Set up by Casey Hudson (Director of Mass Effect Trilogy, KOTOR).

___

There's also another which is fairly new, based in Texas, however they're already owned by Hasbro.

Archtype Entertainment - Led by James Ohlen (Senior Creative Director at Bioware - Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age Origins, Star Wars KOTOR) and Chad Robertson (Technical Director at Bioware), it also has Drew Karpshyn (Lead Writer of KOTOR, Mass Effect 1 - 2).

___

Bonus.

Aspyr - Reportedly a lot of Bioware employees have moved to Aspyr, I recall a Linkedin search did show that to be the case too.

____

There's also a studio called Beamdog based in Canada which is led by Bioware's Co-Founder and Lead Programmer, set up in 2011.

Xbox Publishing should get in contact with Yellow Brick Games and Humanoid Studios at least, I'm aware they can't with Aspyr or Archtype anymore as they're now both owned, funnily I noticed Beamdog is doing work on Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Planescape, etc. All IPs that used to be owned by Brian Fargo, just a fun observation.

Sony is doing a good job at this, they've made some interesting partnerships lately with industry veterans setting up their own studios, could be a risk but risks like these are worth taking, one I'm in particular curious about is their partnership with Firewalk as they're owned by ProbablyMonsters, the founder of ProbablyMonsters is Harold Ryan.

With over 20 years of games industry success, Harold Ryan has been responsible for generating over $5B of revenue through iconic franchises such as Halo, Destiny, Age of Empires, and MechWarrior. He has held distinguished executive roles including CEO, President and Chairman of the Board at Bungie as well as key positions at Microsoft and with Ensemble Studios and FASA Studios.

Ryan took his first role in gaming in 1998 as a game tester for Microsoft, leading to increased management responsibilities for over 30 game titles across leading studios including FASA Studios, Ensemble Studios, and Bungie.

His new studio, ProbablyMonsters, already has 3 sub-studios (he's probably rich as fuck), Sony has partnered with 1 which leaves 2 remaining, all of them are working on AAA franchises, Microsoft would be fools to not be partnering on one of them.

Yeah MS need to keep an eye on ProbalyMonsters, they are literally right next door in Seattle. Even with the Sony partnership with Firewalk I don’t see them as potential acquisition target for Sony since they will likely be worth over 500 million maybe even close to 1 billion.

The Outer Worlds was such a nice experience. Sure it had some issues, but there's so much potential in the series. Glad it can get a good healthy budget and glad MS is cool with them making another one.

Now on the Judgment. A game which I still feel is better than the Yakuza series, but damn Yakuza is amazing. Could be bias as I played it first before Yakuza, but should be a great time regardless. Played on PS, and now on Xbox.

It's #AcquisitionSeason but not for Microsoft! Tencent has acquired Sumo Group for $1.3bn.

Wonder when Tencent will release a streaming service to The West.

Sumo Group as in Sumo Digital the studio based in Sheffield? That's going to be a big loss to platform holders and other publishers with how much support and second party games they made presuming Tencent want them to make full multiplat content.

It’s incredible to me that Amazon and Google we’re not willing to make I investments like this, both Leyou and Sumo would have been chump change for them.

MS better stop messing around and try to grab the studios that they want who are left on the market.
