On that subject, I will always be of the opinion that timed hat deals are worse than acquisitions are. Acquisitions are paying to improve your own platform, timed hat deals are paying to hurt your competition, big difference between the two imo. For me at least, I would actually prefer Sony buying studios that develop games I like, over Sony timed hatting those very same games like they have been. Sony buying a studio I like makes me want to own a Playstation more, as it shows that Sony actually cares about improving themselves. Timed hats just piss me off, they make me want to wait for the game to come to other platforms just to spite Sony.
But, since Sony is bound and determined to stay on this timed moneyhat path they are on, I do think it is high time that Phil starts to fight fire with fire. Phil attempted to call a truce on timed hats after Rise of the Tomb Raider, but Sony grabbed that olive branch out of Phil's hands, dropped it, stomped on it, and then pissed on it, starting with FF7R, then Deathloop, Ghostwire Tokyo, Forspoken/Project Athia, and now even going as far as to really kick Xbox fans in the groin with KOTOR. If Sony is going to pay money just to hurt Xbox and Xbox fans, Phil should respond in kind and make Sony hurt, because MS has a whole lot more money to hat with than Sony does. It will be a hard lessen learned for Jim Ryan, but it's the only way to get him to realize they can't compete with MS in matters of the wallet. It'll be worth it to have a single hellish generation filled with hats from both camps, if it means an actual truce on timed hats next gen, and both parties instead focusing on improving themselves over hurting one another. My two cents anyway, I don't expect many of y'all to agree with me. |
Naw, MS needs to stay the course and spend all their resources on growing GP, getting games day one release and getting them on the service. Timed deals really do not benefit the system that is behind and right now Sony has a clear marketshare advantage where these deals are not as expensive. Timed deals just do not work unless you are the market leader because gamers in general are more than happy to wait it out if they have enough games to play. Sony has enough games, they have the studios, MS isn't going to dent Sony this Gen with time hats but instead if they get those very same games on GP well that is something totally different. Phil did not call any truce on time hats, he just realize that its a waste of money. It did not net any real console sells and it did absolutely nothing to dent Sony lead. Instead Phil realized that value for money increase sales and that is where GP comes into play. Why spend millions of dollars for a year exclusive that gets you basically nothing when you get that that game day one on GP and increase the value of the service and your eco system.
Sony and MS are on 2 different course. MS is going for the billion of devices that play games, Sony is looking to keep their dominance in the console space. The 2 companies are on totally different trajectories and MS is not concerned about money hat deals. There is just to many games that will come out in the next 5 years that in the bigger scheme of things, who cares about timed exclusives. Instead MS need to focus on rebuilding their eco system, focus on growing GP and getting games on the system day one release. From their own first party studios to 3rd party AAA. If MS can do that, their future path is much brighter and stronger.
