Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Microsoft Exec Explains Why They Don’t Post Xbox One NPD Numbers Often, Defends Lack of New IPs

Yeah.

But that would mean that a Microsoft executive is being hypocritical.

You've just worked that out?

Every single time, one minute after NPD, Major Nelson would announce xth consecutive victory. Every single time, even during the very slow summer months.

I wonder what has changed? They did a few months of damage control and downplaying, now they stopped completely. I wonder if September is still considered a slow summer month over there in Redmond?

"He acknowledges that his team is building its momentum against a Sony that currently is rolling forward. "They beat us in June. They beat us in May," Spencer says. "These months are small if you look at the sales. I think the whole month of June is about one week in November. They're winning, and they'll do their PR around it, and that makes sense. The battle is really September, October, November, and December."

September is important for them, from the boss' mouth.

So, we can expect them to openly come out after September's NPD and proudly announce 9th consecutive loss?

Can't see it if they sell 50% or less of PS4's number.

They just don't have much to brag about yet it seems.

September is going to be interesting. I think that's why they are pushing so many special promotions (these are always reimbursed by the console makers btw), it's aggressive moves trying to counteract the PS4 Destiny bundle. For months now that bundle has been steadily building large numbers of preorders, and all that is cashing in this month.

Then you have many hundreds of thousands of new PS4 owners excitedly playing an epic multiplayer release right on the dawn of the fall/holiday season. These people will be on twitter, facebook, game forums, at the game shops & schools all networking for the PS4, whether or not they even realize how important they are. THAT should really scare Microsoft, because PS4 will look like the 'winner' console to get, where all the players and action are. Just like the 360 was most of last gen in the US. So September will lead us into a very tough Oct/Nov/Dec showdown with the big multiplats dropping.

I don't expect them to publish September numbers because I believe the gap will be massive. The only reasoning to publish them is that I believe global numbers will exceed 3:1 easily for the month, and if the US is only 2:1 or a little less, then that looks better to focus on. But that's a long shot. Expect more silence/spin on NPD.

because they are losing, sometimes very badly. thats why.

why did sony not post numbers last gen? yup

Exactly, he just should not have said anything. It's quite embarassing to use that as an excuse when they were doing it EVERYTIME when they were winning with the 360.

there is also a big chance they might lose in the holidays too, and if they do and dont say any numbers, well, you know this will be brought up. gamers on forums simply dont forget, i bet some people already tramed marked this and plan on bringing it up again 3 months from now.

You're right about gamers "not forgetting." However, I've been using gaming message boards since 1999 and in all my time doing it, one thing is certain. They will always conveninently choose NOT to talk about things that work against them in an argument.

For instance. If they don't "forget", why are Sony gamers walking around with victory flags drawn when last gen, Xbox 360 was killing PS3 in sales before getting overtaken in weekly, monthly and then finally, overall sales? You'd think they'd temper themselves a little bit. Hell, even the SNES was losing until year three so it's happened more than once in this industry.

360 was never "killing" PS3 in sales. The reason it had a few million lead for so long was due to launching one year earlier. Other than that their sales were always quite close.

Compare that to the current situation where PS4 is outselling One by at least 3:1

Yeah but that never changed, which is what prayformojo was getting at

They published numbers for January - april.

After april I can not find any official MS reports on NPD numbers.

In 2013 they published NPD numbers most months.
