It's more to do with having a discussion point rather than taking them as gospel and ignoring the reviews. In the past, the devs gave vague requirements that showed min and recommended with potato specs. This gen is different where the devs are giving us fairly detailed requirements with interesting patterns.

So it's not like people won't be posting performance numbers as they come out but until then, it is an interesting point of discussion as we start coming into the next generation of games.

I don't think saying 6700 XT/2070 Super for 1080p60 at medium and a 6800 XT/3080 for 4K60 at epic is interesting is right, just wildly inaccurate.

If the former is true the latter will barely get to 30 fps at 4K. If the latter is true then the former would likely be >120 fps at the same settings, let alone medium. Not to mention if the 3080 and the 6800 are equivalent here then the 6700 will outperform the 2070 Super by 20-25%. If they aren't, they could have picked up better GPUs to compare at the higher end. So nothing about it makes sense... as usual for those spec sheets.

Edit - maybe I'm being too harsh since the department/employee responsible for these likely have limited time and a limited variety of test configurations. But still, in this case, the original point stands.

Well there is too many variables to consider as to the exact reason why they would list those specs but I do think there could be a degree of logical sense which is based on the average performance target.

Firstly with Returnal, 6700XT/2070 Super is meant for High settings and Not Medium according to their specs. A 2070 Super is generally with in 6-8% of a 2080. So if we use an example game such as the Callisto Protocol from Techpowerup with their 1080p benchmark:

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/the-callisto-protocol-benchmark-test-performance-analysis/5.html

You can see that a 6700XT is pretty close to a 2080 which is pretty close to a 2070 Super (if we theorize %) in average in that game. But you can also see that there is a bit of a gap between a 6600XT/3060 vs 6700XT/2080/2070 Super. So if the goal is to tell people that here are two GPUs that is required to hit a 1080p 60fps average at high settings and a 6600XT/3060 are too slow to hit that average but a 2070 Super/6700XT can hit it... Well there you go. Now for all we know, it could be a situation where a 2070 Super just hits 60fps average while a 6700XT does 65fps average. But since AMD doesn't have another GPU that hits 60fps, they decided to put in a 6700XT.

And as for the 3080/6800XT requirements, it could be situation where 6800XT lets say does 60fps and 3080 does 65fps but since a 3070 Ti is too weak or runs out of Vram so they put in a 3080 instead for 4k. I think the main issue is that people are thinking of the averages for a 6700XT during say launch where it was pretty close to a 3070. But the issue is that the 6700XT did not age very well and some recent game testing shows that it's under performing even against a 3060 Ti or 2080.

So overall, I don't think the requirements are nonsensical as we already have AMD sponsored games that showcase a 6700XT performing similar enough to a 2070 Super. It's just you can't take them as accurately as performance reviews but rather a vague preview of potential performance expectations.

Pretty much seems to be the pattern. They apparently went to MS/Nintendos school of product design where one generation of product is great and the generation after is shat. As GPUs sit on shelves as they did with Turing, it is like a domino affect. People not buying GPUs means retailers not ordering more GPUs from Nvidia which leads to Nvidia not ordering more GPUs from TSMC which leads to TSMC lowering their prices. Thanks to the recession, people will be buying less and less. The key question will be that when the next gen comes out with presumably better price to performance ratio, will the mining boom happen again? Cause that's what turned Ampere/RDNA 2 generation from "hot diggity damn" to "oh hell naw."

Yeah lol. Its such a strange thing to see a company repeat the same mistakes. Its not exactly that long ago that Turing sat on sheves.. and it took a good generation of decently priced and specced GPU's; with Ampere, to get people interested in PC hardware again. But now they're back again with horrible pricing (and sales) to keep profits high as they were during the mining boom and pandemic. When the mining crash already happened and people aren't willing to spend that much money on a graphics card. Particuarly in the upper high end/mid range.

The problem is that they think their customers are stupid. But its the contrary when there's an econonic downturn affecting a lot of countries and people, they are more likely to do research first. And if they see a $500 4060Ti barely beating out a 3070Ti, two years later just ain't going to cut it for a lot of people. DLSS 3.0 or no.

The only recourse I can see is that AMD will price Navi 32/33 cards sensibibly and not slip up.. forcing Nvidia to be more competitive with their pricing. But that's unlikely to happen seeing as what they did with Navi 31 vs AD103/4.

Makes me wonder how they will tackle Blackwell in a couple years time. If AMD does manage to pull a rabbit out of the hat with RDNA 4 (and that's a big if) and start playing around with more GCD's and MCM and actually makes a compelling product. Nvidia has to make drastic changes to their strategies. They can't keep selling GPU's at this rate in any case..

True that. The PC GPU industry has largely become a clown fiesta. The issue is that companies are too slow to react to current trends. Nvidia/AMD likely booked unusually large allocation and manufacturing of their last generation cards during the mining boom. Because of this, you have this situation where because of the influx of Ampere/RDNA 2 cards, Nvidia and AMD priced their new cards pretty high.

Last gen you had:

3090 $1500 - 6900XT $1000
3080 $700 - 6800XT $650
3070 $500 - 6800 $580

This gen it's like

4090 $1600
4080 $1200 - 7900XTX $1000
7900XT $900
4070 Ti $800 - Delayed

Now Radeon did the usual and correct thing when there's an influx of GPUs before next gen launch which is to give their prior gen GPUs a massive discounts. Radeon discounted their top to bottom full stack with insane price drops.

Nvidia on the other hand went full greed mode and kept the prices outside of the 3080 Ti and above largely the same and instead increased the prices of the Lovelace GPUs unlike Pascal to Turing where with Pascal, you saw crazy discounted prices of GPUs where a 1080 Ti could be had for as little as $400 brand new. Overall this continuous circus is pretty bad for pc gaming in general. For the first time in the history of gaming, we have Sony first party coming to PC along with a wealth of games that typically skipped PC coming to the platform. But its so dang hard to recommend buying a PC because of the horrendous prices of GPUs. Such a sad state because Lovelace as an architecture is insane. We haven't seen uplifts like this in both performance and efficiency since Pascal days yet... Only those with disposable income can enjoy it... Hopefully Blackwell ends up being better.

China's relaxing its tech crackdown, but it's still keeping a close eye on Tencent
https://www.pcgamer.com/chinas-relaxing-its-tech-crackdown-but-its-still-keeping-a-close-eye-on-tencent/
China might finally be relaxing its tech crackdown, but the government isn't stepping away from the sector entirely. Rather than the strict approach that saw Alibaba fined billions, tech CEO Jack Ma temporarily disappear from the public eye, and game approvals slow to a trickle, the Financial Times reports that the government is switching tack, and moving to take "special management shares"—or "golden shares"—in many of China's leading tech companies, including Tencent.

The sequel to Coffee Talk, the chill cafe sim that taught me I have absolutely no business being a barista, has a release date. Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus and Butterfly will hit PC on April 20, 2023. I don't think the 4/20 release date contains any deliberate symbolism on the developers' part, by the way, but I choose to believe the sequel will have us running an Amsterdam-style coffee shop until proven otherwise.

Warzone 2 is getting its most-requested feature in Season 2, but we'll have to wait a bit longer
https://www.pcgamer.com/warzone-2-is-getting-its-most-requested-feature-in-season-2-but-well-have-to-wait-a-bit-longer/
The release of Call of Duty: Warzone 2 in November was, for the most part, a clean break from the original game. It had largely the same features, a great new map, DMZ mode, and lots of neat quality-of-life updates. The one thing that Warzone 2 did not have, to the dismay of a huge chunk of its community, was a small map. Activision plans to remedy this in Season 2 with the return of Resurgence mode and a new small map to accompany it, but it's taking some extra time to deliver.

Bungie is completely revamping Destiny 2 buildcrafting and removing the most hated modifier in the game
https://www.pcgamer.com/bungie-is-completely-revamping-destiny-2-buildcrafting-and-removing-the-most-hated-modifier-in-the-game/
When Bungie unlocked almost every Destiny 2 armor mod for players last week, there was an accompanying message that raised a lot of eyebrows: "We want to give everyone a chance to enjoy all mods in their current state".
I think most of us expected some sort of rebalancing to come on the February 28 Lightfall expansion release date, but that seemed to hint at something bigger. Today the studio pulled back the curtain on how buildcrafting is changing, and it looks like one of the biggest systemic reworks ever to happen to the game. Almost everything related to buildcrafting—from armor mods, to how champions are stunned, to the much-hated Match Game modifier—is either being substantially changed or in some cases straight-up deleted.

PowerWash Simulator is getting a Tomb Raider expansion for reasons I don't fully understand
https://www.pcgamer.com/powerwash-simulator-is-getting-a-tomb-raider-expansion-for-reasons-i-dont-fully-understand/
In a crossover that I'm pretty sure no one saw coming, PowerWash Simulator is getting a Tomb Raider-themed expansion at the end of this month. Releasing on January 31, PowerWash Sim's free Tomb Raider DLC will see you blasting away the gunk and grime that's somehow accumulated on every square inch of Croft Manor. Judging by the trailer, it doesn't look like you get to dual wield pressure washers at any stage, which seems like a missed opportunity.

Bonus article, because while it's not really gaming related, it's too good to not share it here:

Marines use Metal Gear cardboard box trick to fool AI robot

Hideo Kojima has a pretty great record when it comes to predictions. In Metal Gear Solid 2, he foresaw the downsides of the information economy; In Death Stranding, he tapped into contemporary social isolation just before the pandemic hit and changed everything. But I never thought I'd see the day when soldiers outsmart a military AI by creeping around under a cardboard box.
>> Damned marines! They should keep those tricks secret until the AI uprising happens. They're dooming us all! XD
