Market share is all that I care about, because profitability slowly follows that.

No it doesn't. Google has 60% of the smartphone market and they've made fuck all profit

Yeah, but apple is losing marketshare and should lose some revenue as well.

Apple may be losing marketshare, but it's revenue is rapidly increasing. The number of units sold is what matters for apple, and that's continually increasing...and therefore so is revenue

That's fine, but a company cant just rely on the pie getting bigger, I mean the growth of tablets and smartphones will be happening for a while, but if Apple can it would be good to increase their percentage within that market.  Otherwise, it doesn't impress much.

lol, non-surface MS tablets sold 0.4M in Q3 and you want to assume they sell 1.5m in Q4? Not happening. Let's just stick with the 1.8% market share from Q3 for non-surface tablets and add the 4% from 1 million sold / 25M (Q3 Market total) and we can guess it has about 5.8% market share, which is a huge improvement from 1.8%, but I think they expected better.

More than likely the market increased in Q4 so I would guess 5% at the top end for MS share.

you could buy a windows8 tablet in Q3?

sigh.

Q3 tablets sold for MS - 0.4M

How many new MS tablets for Q4 besides surface?

None.  MS only make one tablet.

Do you mean Windows8 tablets?

I have no fucking idea. Thats the point of most of this discussion.

But Im sure Samsung, Asus, HP, Sony etc etc sold a few.

Yes I meant Windows 8. When I said MS I meant OS (Windows 8 and whatever the Niche tablets use from Q3), not manufacturer.

What we know is that the release of Windows 8 did not increase sales in PC or tablet market, so either Apple and Google lost market share to MS, or Windows 8 tablets aren't selling well. I think it's pretty clear which option is realistic.

"According to sources at parts manufacturers, sales figures for the Nexus 7 have officially shockedGoogle. Originally, El Goog thought 2.5 million units would be sufficient to get them through 2012, but to meet demand for the popular 7″ tablet, Google has placed an additional order of 2.5 million to keep the masses happy. Just weeks ago, we still didn’t have any word that the Nexus 7 was even selling well at all, but ASUS put our minds at ease when they slipped and said they are shipping nearly 1 million a month."

"Google has reportedly increased its cumulative shipment volume in 2012 to more than 5 million units."

So 5 million for 6 months including holiday season at a low price.

Yep, that's small picture though.

Wow!  MSFT tablets are doing pretty badly.  Apple isn't doing that well either, although they sold more bc the pie is just getting bigger.

you are hilariously uninformed.

Yeah, but apple is losing marketshare and should lose some revenue as well.  They've already lost a large amount of stock price, so if you think that revenue will be busting to astronomical highs then you're fooling yourself.

Google tablets on the other hand, push users into google search, its main cash cow.  all they have to do is click on Chrome, and for most users they have google.com as their default page..... and bam! they get going.  This isn't even charging google in the least so in terms of profits they should be a net positive, even though the results improved are technically in other parts of google

I really don't know why I am trying to argue with you, but:

1. Apple's stock price is due to rumors for slower sales of the iPhone 5 and not showing any new innovation that could really capture / create a huge market.

2. Andorid pushing users towards Google Search? That is just stupid. How many of the Android users (no matter if smartphone or tablet or both) have used Google Search before? A very conservative estimation would be 100%. Who the hell needed to be pushed towards a Google Search? Basically everyone on this planet who has access to it used it. Especially the ones using smartphones.

3. Wasn't there an article about MS making more money on Android than Google? *edit* Well, it is probably very close.

Cliffs:

-MSFT sold a million units for Q4, so MSFT stock must be getting ready to soar!

I do not see the point of being sarcastic in your title (should you get banned for that?).
1 million is obviously "not" awesome when we all know Microsoft manufactured at least 5M of them and I think you perfectly know that...

Back on topic: those are "estimates" so I hope the real numbers will get better but with people waiting for the Pro. I would not expect anything higher than that.
Let's see :)

I personally think that sales of 1M are awesome.   A million is more tablets than anybody could shake a stick at!  And I dont appreciate what sounds like your suggestion of me getting banned.

You are completly right to do not appreciate my suggestion about the ban as it was effectively the intend :)
Sorry but this sarcastic title looks like an open invitation to flamewar to me.

This article about Microsoft's patent is very interresting.

Here you can see that Microsoft is actually way ahead in term of patent (Computer Software) and the pipeline is very strong :

This is actually starting to really pay of for them.

Microsoft Surface advertising budget estimated to be between $1-$1.5 billion. I sure hope those 1 million surface tablets profits exceed even 10% of that...

You don't go all out for 1 million tablets. These sales are atrocious. I stand by 5% market share.

No...Windows 8/RT as a whole (PC's, tablets, phones, etc.) had an advertising budget of $1-1.5bn...not just the Surface lol. Anyway, MS spend over $1bn per quarter on advertising normally, so this is no big deal

No they did not. MS yearly advertising budget is 1.6 - 1.9 billion USD for the whole company. It used to be in this range at least.

"How does that compare to, say, Microsoft (MSFT)? Advertising in Redmond was $1.6 billion in fiscal 2012 (its year ends in June), $1.9 billion in 2011, and $1.6 billion in 2010."

http://www.forbes.com/sites/ycharts/2012/08/02/who-spends-more-on-ads-apple-or-microsoft-another-lesson-in-quality-vs-quantity/

Even with all the new releases this year, I doubt it will exceed 2.5 billion USD. This is like the 500 million ad campaign for Kinect and the 500 million Windows phone campaign that never happened. Everbody just accepted this number without any doubt. When the earnings releases came out, it said the EDD had spend 380 million USD or something in that range for advertisement for the holiday quarter, slightly up from previous year.

I really think the marketing budget for Windows 8 will be much smaller than a lot of people would guess.
