I would be interested in some Nexus tablet numbers

It sold 1m in Nov, so probably another 2m in December. Worldwide btw

Really? Is that all? I'd have expected much more.

makes surface look great for a new entrant.

Nexus 7 is a new entrant too...or how do you define new?

The Nexus 7 has been out for 6 months...therefore it's not a new market entrant.

Based on what criteria? I would think it being the first nexus tablet and it coming out just last year should be enough. It also didn't release officially in many countries in Europe at least until late 2012

A new market entrant is a new market entrant. It's not rocket science.

The idea of an Android powered tablet is nothing new.

The idea of a Windows RT and/or Windows 8 tablet however...

Which is why sales should be higher.  Expect Surface sales to be something like 100,000 in feb, march, etc

*facepalm*

Well, the sales results given were for the quarter, or the last 3 month span.   So we have something like 333,333 sold per month during the holidays.  Unless we have a price cut on the Surface, expect these numbers.

The surface doesn't need a price cut. The point of the surface was for Microsoft to show the hardware developers that there's a market for Windows 8/ RT tablets, and they've succeeded. Now they'll just let Samsung, HP, etc. do the dirty work

They haven't shown that there is a market for Windows 8, with the Surface, buddy.  Perhaps you're talking about the sales in a wholistic manner ( with the PC's, phones, etc) but whatever.

"According to sources at parts manufacturers, sales figures for the Nexus 7 have officially shockedGoogle. Originally, El Goog thought 2.5 million units would be sufficient to get them through 2012, but to meet demand for the popular 7″ tablet, Google has placed an additional order of 2.5 million to keep the masses happy. Just weeks ago, we still didn’t have any word that the Nexus 7 was even selling well at all, but ASUS put our minds at ease when they slipped and said they are shipping nearly 1 million a month."

"Google has reportedly increased its cumulative shipment volume in 2012 to more than 5 million units."

So 5 million for 6 months including holiday season at a low price.

Yep, that's small picture though.

Cliffs:

-MSFT sold a million units for Q4, so MSFT stock must be getting ready to soar!

I do not see the point of being sarcastic in your title (should you get banned for that?).
1 million is obviously "not" awesome when we all know Microsoft manufactured at least 5M of them and I think you perfectly know that...

Back on topic: those are "estimates" so I hope the real numbers will get better but with people waiting for the Pro. I would not expect anything higher than that.
Let's see :)

I personally think that sales of 1M are awesome.   A million is more tablets than anybody could shake a stick at!  And I dont appreciate what sounds like your suggestion of me getting banned.

i thought a sales of 1 million is also good, I mean this is only part of microsoft's windows 8 line.  I would assume people just prefer their full blown windows 8 with their desktop or laptop, but this is a good number nevertheless especially on its infacy stage on a society that already have ipad or other tablet.

Well Windows phones and tablets still have anemic developer support.

Why buy an RT tablet with little to no software when you can get an iPad for the same price and offers a much wider assortment of quality apps and games?

The main selling points for a Windows tablet over an iPad (for me) is Microsoft Office and Xbox games

Anyway, you're right about the lack of apps. If I were M$ I'd do a developerathon (or whatever they called it) like Blackberry did in which they gave any devs who submitted an app over a designated 36 hours period $100 dollers. It worked for BB, because in 36 hours they increased the number of apps in their App Store by 15k

Wow!  MSFT tablets are doing pretty badly.  Apple isn't doing that well either, although they sold more bc the pie is just getting bigger.

@That tablet shipment chart:

Were any Windows tablets even available in Q3 2012?! :o

Yeah, they need to do something. WP7 has been out a while now and it is still greatly lacking in that area. Other than that I think the OS is great, but not great enough to the point where I don't care about what games and apps are available to me while using that OS.

They say porting to RT is simple right? Hopefully this year shows some big changes.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

* Microsoft captured a niche 2 percent global tablet share in Q3 2012. The imminent release of the new Windows 8 operating system will likely drive Microsoft tablet volumes higher during the Q4 2012 holiday season.

No, and if they sold 1 million surface tablets in Q4 that's about 4% of the tablet market for Q4 (assuming Q4 shipments = Q3 shipments). Take from that what you will.
