No, because a patch won't fix the fact that the drive is incapable of doing it.

The drive is capable of playing DVDs.  Homebrew allows the Wii to do it.

I wish more people knew that.

I don't think I've every seen anyone link to Nintendo's official site.

I don't think so.

On a side note, I think it's pretty cool now that the Americans have Netflix, the UK has iPlayer, and the Japanese have that video/music channel thing of their own.

Hopefully more companies will come forward to add channels to the Wii.

The link goes strieght to the nintendo site. The offcial one. I doubt nintendo will lie about this or bring up a rumor

Oh Netflix is definitely coming to the Wii.

I was just saying 'I don't think so' to the OP asking whether this means there will be an update to allow the Wii to play DVDs now.

Hm Well the wii doesn't have a big memory. They can. It'll be interesting on how they'll do this

It will allow the Wii to stream movies from the Netflix website.  The Wii will not be able to play DVDs.

You mean like youtube? So I have to have inernet while watching the movie?

(killeryoshis note - Who put that there ?)
Switch is 9th generation. Everyone else is playing on last gen systems! UPDATE: This is no longer true

Yes.  If you are a Netflix member, you can stream some movies directly from their website.  It does not currently support the Wii, but when this goes into effect, it will.

Last year Nintendo realeased a new revision of Wii´s which made it inpossible to play dvd´s even with the homebrew apps but on Wii´s before that revision you can play dvd´s

Interesting.

I wonder how they managed to do that.  Maybe the hackers just haven't figured it out yet?

that was cracked with software about a week of it being discovered as the drive itself is a dvd drive and the wii disks are dvds with special codes on them the firmware tells the drive to not accept discs without the code. the community is fast. within one day of the last firmware that blocked homebrew instal attempts and removed homebrew there was already a work around.

scratch that, the solution was there before the problem apparently.

Well I guess that answers my question.

ummm this was announced weeks ago. How did all of you miss that? Remember Reggie was saying that it was no big deal that the Wii version won't allow the few HD titles Netflix has?

i think the guy was referring to the newer wiis not having the same pins or somesuch that makes it harder/impossible to install modchips. modchips were the first method of using dvds but is no longer necessary.
