gescores said: Just some random though about 360 and PS3 hardware. In both case the processors were mainly designed base on the IBM PowerPC chips. Sounds a bell anyone? Yep it's the same architecture that once equipped the Mac. So we are all playing on Mac! Sort of...
The biggest change will come from better GPU and both NVIDIA and AMD are working hard on better integration between the GPU and the CPU. It's next big thing.
IMO, their CPU are sub-optimal in both cases, with Cell being a bit weaker in brute force, but better designed for video game (vectorization mainly) so it even out. Then on the GPU side, PS3 is weaker, with half the memory and slower clock than the ATI card equipping the XBOX 360. On a technological side, the PS3 is more advance and represent a better integration. The 360 is like a traditional PC. |
Power PC Cpus in Consoles is nothing new. We have a IBM CPU in the Wii and in the GameCube. Xbox360 is not a standard computer Xbox was a PC but the Xbox360 is a 100% pure gaming console designed for videogames. If the 360 is like a traditional PC then the PS3 is one too. Because they are more similar to each other then to a PC. They have both a PC graphics card slightly changed they have both a Power PC Cpu the Xbox360 has 3 PPC Cores the PS3 just One but 6 SPEs. The PS3 has also GDDR3 RAM and XDRAM Xbox has just GDDR3 Ram. But they are definetly not a PC they are a console the Xbox has 10 mb Edram is this usual for PCs ? It has not a X86 Core. the first Xbox had one. They just took a PC and put it in to a console housing but the 360 was designed from scratch.
Ok the video card from the Xbox can use the full 512 MB But it cant because the CPU needs the Ram too. Both systems have 512 Mb Ram. The Cpu of the PS3 isnt designed for gaming BUT it has the SPEs and you can make everything with them its hard to achieve but it take work of the VideoCard because it is able to handle Graphics Computing aso the SPEs can be used for everything. In conclusion the Xbox360 ha a clever designed system which is easier to use then the PS3. The delevlopers can use the potential from the 360 a lot easier then the potential from the PS3. But the PS3 has a highe potential. And you can see that in the exclusives. If the developes take the time and try to use all of advantages of the PS3 the result can be great.
Uncharted 2 is the FIRST game that actually uses the SPEs all the time. No other game uses them all the time. In Uncharted 1 the SPEs where IDLE 70% of the time. But they said recently that they didnt even optimized the code. They just made sure that the SPEs are busy all the time. And they could make games with even better graphics.
Its a Disadvantage if the Hardware is too complex to use all the power that wont happen again this philosophy is ken Kutaragis Philospophy and he is gone. Sony asks the programmer what they could improve or what CPUs they want.
The PS3 GPU is weaker then the Xbox360 GPU but the Cell makes up for it you can see that that the exclusives have still better graphics.
There is a rumor that first Sony wanted to use 2 Cells instead of Cell plus Nvidia GPU but it would be even harder to programm and more expensive so they decided to use a PC GPU.
The PS3 is able to handle better graphics. The Cell is a CPU/GPU. Thats why we have some exclusives which look significantly better on PS3.
And aslong as I havent seen a game on Xbox360 (in its fifth year) that has better graphics then Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 this is pretty much proven for me.
And at the time the Xbox360 released its CPU was not suboptimal it is a beauty and was cutting edge at the time a Triple Core CPU with a lot of power. The 360 is a really clever design thats why it is hard for the PS3 to really show its power because the 360 is not as far away as it should be.
