Forums - Sales Discussion - The Iwata's Bold Prediction thread

Some of you may recall that in August Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a bold prediction regarding his company's three flagship holiday titles, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit+, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In essence, Iwata said that all three titles could sell at least 10 million copies each worldwide. To understand the magnitude of this, only 35 titles have ever sold that many copies in all of gaming's history.

This thread is going to track all three titles to see if Iwata's prediction ever comes true. It will be updated sporadically as news comes in or as I remember its existence. Y'all are welcome to say if you think Iwata may be right, or if he hit the sake a bit hard that morning. As time goes on, this thread may become a cheerleading thread where we spur on a title or three towards its goal, or it may become a peanut gallery where we all get together and laugh at Iwata's silliness.

As of the end of September, Nintendo revealed that Resort had sold nearly seven million copies worldwide, and that Wii Fit+ was sitting at just over 2 million copies sold. As of this moment, VGChartz says that Wii Sports Resort have seen a dramatic decrease in sales, with only 7.37 million copies sold. Wii Fit+ has fared better, with 3.59 million copies currently in people's homes. And the neophyte New Super Mario Bros. Wii is at 2.21 million even without a Japanese launch.

So I throw the question out to you. Will Iwata's company rise even further into heaven? Or will the stratosphere be the limit?

Wii Fit + might actually reach the 10 million mark last

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

Didn't he say 10m shipped for all three was the goal by the year ending March 2010?

New Super Mario Brothers Wii will easily make it.

Wii Sports Resort will easily make it.

The question is whether Wii Fit Plus will make it.

NSMBWii may even make it before the end of the month.

I remember the March 2010 part, although I couldn't find a link containing that part. And you're probably right that it's shipped rather than sold (this is a Nintendo investment briefing, after all), but I couldn't find clarification one way or the other.

And I agree with your analysis. I'd expected Resort to be further behind than it is, and Plus to be higher than it is. My guess right now is that Plus will be the weak link that ends at only 6-8 million by March.

Wii Fit Plus will make it if they in part of their advertising place the fact that you can buy it stand alone and it works with the other wii fit balance board. Then again this is all a little confusing.

"Like you know"

I think if Wii fit plus can exit December with at least 6 million sold it can make it by the end of march

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Yes only 35 games have ever sold 35 million, but 25 of those were by Nintendo, and out of those 25 Nintendo games that sold 10 million, 11 of them are from the Wii and DS in just the last few years. They're just getting started.

I think all 3 will make it. These are the 3 games people should be picking up with their Christmas Wiis. The best sports game/motion game collection/party game, the best balance game collection/exercise game, and the best platformer.

And I can't believe Wii Fit Plus will be the last one to make it. That's pretty crazy. I think the billions of Wii Fit owners need to find out it exists, is way better, has more games, uses your previous save data, and is only $20.

Well it's certainly lagging behind its two counterparts. NSMBWii is already on the verge of catching up!

Wiifit+ is just a slower burner than the other ones. Sport resort has several month lead and is still doing really well in others. I believe resort had stronger legs in Japan as well. Mario on the other hand should be expected to have much higher opening. The holiday is being very kind to it as well.

So yes Wiifit will probably be last to ten million. I don't know if Mario and Wiifit+ will make it before March though.
