Some of you may recall that in August Nintendo President Satoru Iwata made a bold prediction regarding his company's three flagship holiday titles, Wii Sports Resort, Wii Fit+, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. In essence, Iwata said that all three titles could sell at least 10 million copies each worldwide. To understand the magnitude of this, only 35 titles have ever sold that many copies in all of gaming's history.
This thread is going to track all three titles to see if Iwata's prediction ever comes true. It will be updated sporadically as news comes in or as I remember its existence. Y'all are welcome to say if you think Iwata may be right, or if he hit the sake a bit hard that morning. As time goes on, this thread may become a cheerleading thread where we spur on a title or three towards its goal, or it may become a peanut gallery where we all get together and laugh at Iwata's silliness.
As of the end of September, Nintendo revealed that Resort had sold nearly seven million copies worldwide, and that Wii Fit+ was sitting at just over 2 million copies sold. As of this moment, VGChartz says that Wii Sports Resort have seen a dramatic decrease in sales, with only 7.37 million copies sold. Wii Fit+ has fared better, with 3.59 million copies currently in people's homes. And the neophyte New Super Mario Bros. Wii is at 2.21 million even without a Japanese launch.
So I throw the question out to you. Will Iwata's company rise even further into heaven? Or will the stratosphere be the limit?
